Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cortina d'Ampezzo is a very popular winter resort located in the northern part of the Veneto region of Italy. This town is situated in the Dolomites, which are a part of the eastern Italian Alps and can offer well-equipped bases, a full range of sports activities and the best European level of service. In winter this quiet mountain town turns into a Mecca for winter sports. But in summer in Cortina d'Ampezzo there are also some activities that the town can offer to the tourists. These are hiking tours, a lot of tracks for bike trips, interesting excursions using cable-cars and buses and mountain restaurants offering local cuisine.
Cortina d'Ampezzo is one of the most popular ski tourist destinations in the world. It has a developed transport system and tourist facilities and can be easily reached by bus from Calalzo di Cadore, which is around 30km away, Venice and Treviso. Calalzo di Cadore has a railway station and both Venice and Treviso has its own airports. In Cortina d'Ampezzo a service called the Dolomitibus connects the attractions so it is very popular among the hikers. In the mountains are located the so-called rifugios (a mountain hostel, cafe, and a restaurant in one place). They are located in very picturesque places so tourists can admire with the mountain views while having rest.
The tourist season in Cortina d'Ampezzo is divided into winter and summer. Though the holiday here costs more than in Czech Republic, Slovakia or Poland, every year it is visited by the skiers and fans of other sports from all over the world. In summer most hotels, ski tracks and other facilities are closed, but you can still go hiking, climbing and cycling.
The town of Cortina d'Ampezzo is beautiful itself with its splendid mountain scenes. But the thing that Cortina d'Ampezzo is proud of most of all is the hosting of the Winter Olympics in 1956. Here you can also visit the eighteenth-century parish church Chiesa parrocchiale, its three museums located in one building, the art gallery, the paleontological museum and an outdoor museum of the Great War.
